One thing that every new car needs

I've got a simple idea that will change the way we drive forever! It would surely save billions – no, trillions – of dollars in car accidents over the next few millenia. It's so easy, I can't believe no one has thought of it before.*

Every car needs a U-turn signal. Just think how many times you've seen somebody going to make a U-turn and almost bonk right into somebody turning right into the same lane as the U-turner. Or when the driver behind almost bumper tags the U-turner because they expect them to get through the intersection faster. More clear communication is what's required here.

That's why cars should be able to use their existing lights to signal a U-turn. Here's the best way to do it. Today, a car's turn lever has two options for signalling – push it half way so it signals as long as you hold it, or push it past the click so that it stays on until the steering wheel is turned the opposite way. There should be a third level – push past a second click, and the U-turn signal is engaged. Then, the exterior signal lights would blink in a pattern. I suggest two quick blinks and a pause, repeated. "blink-blink, unh, blink-blink, unh, U-turn, unh, U-turn, unh..."

Easy peasy. Somebody send me a copy of the first car that has it. That's all I need.

*Ok, somebody already thought of it, but this is so lame! An extra light? You'd have to look carefully to see which blinker is flashing. That extra second is a lot of time when driving. A peppy blinking pattern is much easier to perceive quickly. Safer. Cheaper to implement. No pesky government regulations for the extra light.
